More than any other generation in my lifetime, this present generation is obsessed with dressing-up their bodies to appear as glamorous as they can afford. This, showy, worldly glamour is veneer-thick! Glamour obsession is a dangerously delusional game that seeks to promote ‘self’ above all others, including God. It’s a game where ‘I’ is the hero. ‘I’ also happens to be the middle letter of SIN! This game is emotionally and relationally destructive for all players.
Desiring to be an attractive person is natural and good. But the question for many is: with the way I look, how can I ever be attractive enough? I’m too short, too tall, lips are too thin, don’t have much of a rear-end, freckle-faced, no ‘boobies’, etc. Such thinking is quite common and is usually the reason why many are quick to disqualify themselves through erroneously believing they were born with an attraction deficit.
For the first 26 years of my life, this was my honest belief of myself. However, when I gave God permission to transform my thinking, He enabled me to see myself, and others, through His eyes. In doing so I came to understand that everyone can be attractive… more than just enough. And, it doesn’t require chemicals, surgery, gym work, various body-beautiful accessories, or money!
The mind and heart are the control centres of our lives. The way we think and what we believe is what needs radical surgery that can produce inner beauty that is powerfully attractive to everyone, and imperishable! Such special surgery is the work of God’s Spirit who indwells every true Christian believer. It’s what He has in mind to do for us without us asking… if we permit Him!
The most attractive person who has ever lived in our world is Jesus, the Christ. Physically? No! Of Jesus, the Prophet Isaiah says, “There was nothing beautiful or majestic about His appearance, nothing to attract us to Him” (53:2b). Jesus’ attraction was His inner beauty of “love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, gentleness, and self-control” (Galatians 5:22,23).
Transforming us into beautiful people is our Heavenly Father’s prime intention. Concerning those who have surrendered their lives to God, Romans 8:29 says… “God chose them to become like his Son.”
Friends, since the time of my radical surgery, I no longer see myself as an ugly duckling, but someone who reflects the lasting, inner beauty of God!
Best wishes,
