What is this ‘love’ that our world desperately needs? Where do we find it? How can we get our hands on it? The answers to these important questions, and other questions of life, are found in the Bible.
The Book of 1 Corinthians defines ‘love’ in these words… “Love is patient and kind. Love is not jealous or boastful or proud or rude. Love does not demand its own way. Love is not irritable, and it keeps no record of when it has been wronged. It is never glad about injustice but rejoices when ever the truth wins out. Love never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance. Love lasts forever…” (13:4-8).
I don’t know how you feel about this definition of love, but for me, I gladly welcome more of it into our world. I would like to see less selfishness, unforgiveness, anger, hostility, and bloodletting – and more selflessness, forgiveness, sacrifice and compassionate love. Wouldn’t our world be a delightful place to live in if this kind of love flowed freely in and through relationships?
Where do we find this love? The Bible says, “Anyone who does not love does not know God – for God is love” (1 John 4:8).
How can we experience this love? The answer is quite simple. If we accept what 1 John 4:8 says, then getting love happens from first getting God into our lives! Getting God into our lives provides the way of getting love into our world… we are to be God’s love-conduits! Listen to what the Book of Romans says about this: “We know how dearly God loves us, because He has given us the Holy Spirit to fill our hearts with His love” (5:5).
Long before Burt Bacharach and Hal David were born… long before mankind appeared on the face of this world, God had a master plan in place that would remedy our greatest need – the provision of His gracious love through the giving of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ (John 3:16).
What can we do in light of this scriptural truth? We can open our hearts to God, petitioning Him to fill our hearts with love, sweet love, to overflowing… ministering to our need, and through us to others in our circles of life, then outreaching our world! Friends, love is an ‘action’ verb. The Lord delights to transform Christian homes and churches into love gymnasiums. There’s no better way to attract the unchurched to God than through acts of practical love. This is what the world needs… right now!
