The Prophet Elijah was the last to serve as Judge over the Nation of Israel. He was God’s “premium” Judge….highly respected and loved by his people. Elijah is now quite advanced in age and the nation’s elders were not happy for Samuel’s two sons to step into their dad’s shoes to serve as Judges over them. Samuel’s sons, Joel and Abijah, were notorious for their greed of money. They had accepted bribes and perverted justice. They lacked right character and conduct. (1 Sam. 8:1-3).

The Book of First Samuel records, Finally, all the elders of Israel met at Ramah to discuss the matter with Samuel. “Look,” they told him, “You are now old, and your sons are not like you. Give us a king to judge us like all the other nations have” (vv. 4-5). Wow! Wow! Wow! Sounds like God is about to be made redundant!
Samuel did as God instructed – He warned the elders of the consequence of replacing God with an earthly king. He outlined such things as military conscription of young men, crown forfeiture of prime land, forced field-labour, their daughters expected to serve in the palace kitchen, taxation of produce and livestock, and the imposition of other costs… (8:10-17).
The Lord responded to the displeased Samuel with this instruction, “Do everything they say to you, for they are rejecting Me, not you. They don’t want Me to be their king any longer. Ever since I brought them from Egypt, they have continually abandoned me and followed other gods. And now they are giving you the same treatment. Do as they ask, but solemnly warn them about the way a king will reign over them” (vv.7-9).

Friends, the Universe was designed and created to function under theocratic rule (God-rule); not autocratic-dictatorship, not democracy, not laissez-faire, not any other form of man-made government. The Universe today is groaning… it’s sick and not functioning well. Why? The world refuses to acknowledge God as the Sovereign King of the Universe! Instead, the world continues to rely on faulty human agents (democratically elected politicians and self-imposed autocratic dictators) to rule and govern over them… doing whatever, according to the popular mood and thinking of the day.
Just like the Nation of Israel in Samuel’s day, the world today is experiencing precisely what it deserves. While the world has what it wants, it’s not satisfied with what it has. Rulers have come and gone… their successors are coming and going… replacements will continue to come and go. None have scrubbed-up well enough to remain. Although good impressions and promises were made, they lacked character substance, know-how, and ability.
Human beings are inferior choices to govern the world independently apart from God’s direction and power. Human beings are “the created”, not the Creator. They are “dependent consumers”, not the Provider. They lack the calibre of character, heart, wisdom, insight, foresight and judgement that is needed to manage the complexities of life that, if not managed well, adversely affect lives, countries… the world! The bottom line is this: No human agent or agency is capable of managing our lives and the world in which we live without God’s authority, guidance, and power.
God is the stand-alone choice to govern. He is supremely qualified, competent and deserving to receive our vote to rule as “the” unrivalled King of kings.
Paid-in-full through Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross, God’s management service is offered to every person free of charge. If you haven’t done so already, give God your vote today and you will enjoy His unfailing promise to work everything in your life together for good… yes, everything (past, present, and future)! (Rom. 8:28). The moment a person repents of their sins and turns to God, surrenders their life to Christ and welcomes the Holy Spirit into their heart to rule, God will display a “Now Under Right Management” sign on the mantle of the door of their heart.
Friends, God has maintained a faultless track record with me over the forty-six years He’s had my vote. Under His leadership and enabling power I have not had the need to worry about anything and have been able to rejoice “in” everything! (Phil. 4:6-7; 1 Thess. 5:16-17). God’s management is “right” management. His management is what you, I and the world cannot live and prosper without. Does God have your vote?
Best wishes
Bill
