The main theme of Psalm 91 is God’s protection of His people during distressing circumstances—among them pestilence, terror, darkness, enemies, and war. Interestingly, we have no title indicating who composed it, like we have with other Psalms.
James Montgomery Boice observes, “God does not always lift a Christian out of troubles. Sometimes it is His will that we endure them and profit from them. We are told in Romans that we acquire hope, develop character, and learn perseverance from what we suffer (5:3-4). When we go through such circumstances, God goes through them with us. He sustains us in our sufferings.” biblegateway.com
Great security is promised to believers amid danger. Wisdom shall keep them from being afraid without cause, and faith shall keep them from being unduly afraid. Whatever is done, our heavenly Father’s will is done; and we have no reason to fear. What a blessing it is to know that no matter what happens on earth, we have the security of our salvation through Christ! We must remember that our eternal hope of heaven far outweighs the struggles here on earth. Biblehub.comWe can be assured that God is, and always will be, faithful. As we look back over our lives, we can see where God has come through for us – even if we didn’t realise it at the time. He always has our best interests at heart, and we can trust Him for our future. This is the evidence and confidence that we have in Him. Psalm 91
Those who live in the shelter of the Most Highwill find rest in the shadow of the Almighty.
This I declare about the Lord:
He alone is my refuge, my place of safety;
He is my God, and I trust Him.
For He will rescue you from every trap
and protect you from deadly disease.
He will cover you with His feathers.
He will shelter you with His wings.
His faithful promises are your armour and protection.
Do not be afraid of the terrors of the night,
nor the arrow that flies in the day.
Do not dread the disease that stalks in darkness,
nor the disaster that strikes at midday.
Though a thousand fall at your side,
though ten thousand are dying around you,
these evils will not touch you.
Just open your eyes,
and see how the wicked are punished.
If you make the Lord your refuge,
if you make the Most High your shelter,
no evil will conquer you;
no plague will come near your home.
For He will order his angels
to protect you wherever you go.
They will hold you up with their hands
so you won’t even hurt your foot on a stone.
You will trample upon lions and cobras;
you will crush fierce lions and serpents under your feet!
The Lord says, “I will rescue those who love Me.
I will protect those who trust in My name.When they call on Me, I will answer; I will be with them in trouble.
I will rescue and honour them.
I will reward them with a long life
and give them My salvation.”
As you read through this Psalm and reflect on all God’s promises (I found 33!) hopefully you can identify those times in your life where God has truly shown you His sovereignty by rescuing you, meeting your needs, answering your prayers, protecting you and so much more. This song by Josh Baldwin reminds us again that God’s loving kindness is all over our lives.
May you be encouraged to put your hope in Him every day, as you walk into your future.“Evidence”
