Are you O.H.M.S?

At an early age, I first noticed the initials O.H.M.S. printed on the top-left corner of envelopes that appeared in the letterbox at our home address in Sydney.  Several years passed before I learned that O.H.M.S was an initialism for On Her Majesty’s Service (“Her Majesty” referred to Queen Elizabeth II).

O.H.M.S was an official franking of all correspondence dispatched from government departments in the United Kingdom, Canada, Australia and other countries of the Commonwealth.  As O.H.M.S represented the reigning monarch of the Commonwealth, such correspondence was regarded as ‘top priority’ and were handled with utmost respect and greatest care.

In John 4:34, responding to a question by His disciples, Jesus said, “My nourishment [satisfaction] comes from doing the will of God.” And in John 17:4, Jesus prayed to His Father, “I brought glory to you here on earth by completing the work you gave me to do”. Friends, the express purpose of Jesus’ coming to earth was to serve His Heavenly Father. Jesus came to us O.H.F.S (On His Father’s Service) to do and finish everything His Father gave Him to do, especially the giving of His life on a cross – The main event of His O.H.F.S.!

When a person surrenders their life to Christ, they no longer live their lives for themselves, instead, they consecrate their lives to serving their Heavenly Father whose Spirit reigns within as their Supreme Monarch – gladly serving their Father’s agenda.  The Bible speaks of Believers as being ‘ambassadors’ of God, living on earth as aliens – serving according to their Father’s will and pleasure.  (2 Corinthians 5:20).  For such ambassadors, Heaven is home!

In our time on earth, it’s so easy to get caught-up in much busyness – wearing ourselves out to the point of exhaustion – doing this and that for meaningless outcomes. As Believers of Jesus Christ, we have been saved from such a ‘meaningless existence’ and have been commissioned by the Lord to be O.H.M.S. witnesses – proudly serving our Heavenly Monarch in the contexts of family, work, and recreation – locally and globally (Acts 1:8).
Think about it – Believers are those who have been saved and specially chosen to serve the Creator of the Universe, the King of kings, our Sovereign Monarch! So, my question is… What on earth are you doing – Are you O.H.M.S?
